Ya know, for typical coders, almost all have their other self to talk to. A sparring partner. Somebody to ask where he knows eggsactly what the problem is w/o the need to explain things. Our brain. Mine name’s Brane. He’s a it. But from now on, i’d rather call it Brane rather than just it. He’s inside my head, wrinkly, and as old as me as we born at the same exact time.

Nope, i don’t have a multiple personality disorder. I can assure you that. I just have this monologing habit when i write codes. And yea, just when i write codes. I ‘m a sane person.

So this, is a mark. Where all the good ol fashioned codes and the mind thingies begin.

Pretty much un-fortunate for me, I ran into him this morning on my way to Iza Media office. As actually my office is — surprisingly — nearby his house, so it ‘s not really an incidentally occasion. He told me that there ‘s a thing in his head he need to ask me, — yet again — so we ‘re headed together to my office.

We ‘re here at my office, I turn my pc on, I sat, He sat. My pc reach the desktop, by that exact time I ‘ve already feels this heat like a heated volcano would exploded nearby me.
..and it explodes.

“So Jarot, after your whole explanations about online opportunities, I ‘d really like to know if to create a website is as easy as you ‘ve told me couple days a go.” There he goes, he has it.

“Umm, what?” It confused me a bit.
As I never really mention the “it’s-easy-to-create-a-website” part.

While I did explained some of the-what-and-the-how of how things works on the internet – and fyi this dude is aint a tech savvy to the core – I still remember it precisely that I never mentioned about making a website is easy.

“I ‘m positive, I never told ya that creating websites like what I have live up there is easy. Where did ya get that idea anyway?”

I replied lightly. Light up my A-Mild cig. Flat face mode : ON.
.. and you know what, he giggles.

“Haha, you got me on that. Yea, you never really mentioned it. I made that part up. So c’mon, gimme your secret.”

He just admit that he lied, yet he seems damn proud of it. I ‘m sure there’s something wrong with his head.

“What more secrets do you want, you ‘ve seen it all these last 2 weeks.”

I shoot back. Yet another headshot. I ‘m beginning to become an expert on this shooting back thingy.

Not Easy, Aleast for Me.

“All I did is code this code that — you ‘ve seen it — Create some graphics — you ‘ve seen it also — and blogging. That ‘s that. And one thing for sure, to create A website is never easy. Atleast for me.”
I added some more pressures on my tone.

I can see this desperation is growing bigger on his eyes.

“So it ‘s not easy huh?” he replied desperately, like he has loose the war of this century of something.
“I ‘m not really a designer, nor even a programmer like you, so the whole online earning thingy is really just for dudes like you? Right?” He ‘s down even more.

IF there ‘re others on this room, they ‘d definitely cry a river for him seeing how desperate being he is this very second.

Me? Nah.. I ‘m NOT buying it. Not a bit.

He ‘s been doing this the whole 2 weeks, So I know exactly he ‘s faking it this time just like previously, and the previously previous. Maybe he thought it ‘s his first time to trick me this way, or he might thought I don ‘t remember it anymore the last time he did it. I dunno.

I really think there ‘s something absolutely wrong with his head.

So I slap it hard to make it right.

“Okay stop your lousy act now, you did it the same style even the same mimic like the last time. What was it, yeah, yesterday. So stop it.”

I slap it once more.

And he stopped, and mumbled, “Geez, it ‘s not working!”
And looked up at me, putting up that — dumbest smile I ‘ve ever seen — on his face.

There ‘s definitely something wrong with his head. Positive.

It called Website Builder

“Okay so, there ‘s actually an easy way to create a professional website, and this one might be the one for ya. It called website builder. With this tool, you won ‘t need to be a designer nor programmer to built a website. You can point and click, right? Just add a bit imagination and BOOM, you ‘ve created a website. Wanna have those kind of professional lookie websites, it ‘s all there for ya to choose.”

“Yup, this one is definitely for ya.” I concluded.
“Why don’t you say so!” He punch my shoulder hard.
“I just did.” I punch back. He took a cig from my A-mild pack. Light it up.
“So, man, tell me, Why don ‘t you use this website builder for all your websites up there?” He ask this thing, and this is the first time he asked a reasonable thing.

“Well, I ‘m a coder, remember? It ‘s a pride for me to code my own site. As simple as that.”
I replied.
He stand up.

“Alritey, you can keep that pride and your wholesome code-this-code-that thingy of yours, I ‘ll definitely go with this website builder. I ‘ll see ya around buddy.”
He leave.
Just like that.

Oh well, It ‘s great anyway, time to get back to work.

Crap! That moronic creature took it with him!

You guys know Wade Wilson, right? Which later becoming Deadpool – which is the Weapon XI, from X-men Origin – Wolverine 2009 big screen? This buddy of mine got the exact speedy tongue just like Wade. Sorta make me dizzy hearing ‘em mumbling around about everything and anything that just floated out of his mind. He ‘s even got this same answer as Wade every time ones got tired of it and shout to shut him up. “Not When I ‘m awake”.

But, this evening is a different story. I wont get tired of his speaky thingy he ‘d shoot. As I ‘d keep him busy with this some sorta challenge I got this morning in my mailbox. I ‘ve mentioned previously, I ‘m not really into Search engine optimization and such, not even an SEO analyst or make a living hourly by it. But these kind of emails keep coming in and yeah, I always try to do my best to respond ‘em. This email was asked my service – while I never really offer any SEO or SEM service – to optimize his Credit and debt consolidation site. I giggled a bit when this one coming in this morning. Not that this subject is my fave, no, it’s just.. it finally arrives, the real – like real real – moment to give this Weapon XI buddy of mine a real play. Well he ‘s always mumbling around about this mojo thingy he ‘s got to optimize any type of site quoted to his desk – while I never really see any live prove of ‘em. Ha, this is it.

He sit, grabbed my cig pack, I quickly grab my nescafe-original-can to avoid him grabbing it.
“So bud, what’s goin on with ya this evening with Vai’s Lotus Feet inside your head?” Hah, he shoot me first.
“You know, same old same old, code this code that, kinda sorta..” I shoot back,
“Hey, you know what, I got this exact cup-of-coffee of yours, thought you ‘d interested. SEO thingy, a Credit and debt consolidation site owner wanna make his site to the first page search engine position result for this debt consolidation keyword. Wanna take a look at it?”
He replied quickly, “Hell yea I wanna look at it.”

I shoot back perfectly, one bullet only, a head-shot.

I show him the email, he read it really-really carefully, while behind him, I can’t help my giggles. “Yup, this one definitely my daily cup.” He finally sat back to his chair.

“Wanna work on it? I ‘ll deal with the pricing and stuff with the client. Will make sure you get enough cut. I know your price.” I ‘m sitting back to my chair. “Sure thing, on it.” He replied.

“So what ‘s the plan? Wanna share your tipsy tricks? You know you ‘re way way above my ceiling in a matter of SEO thingy. Is it hard? Optimizing Credit and Debt Consolidation Site?.” I ‘m starting the spread of my spider web with his fave bait – flattery.

A non working day.

I should ‘ve have one of that. To be precise, I should ‘ve have one Sunday, someday.

Call me Crazy!

I work at home. It started by the time I woke up, and it ends when I felt asleep. Programming and Designing projects came to my desk almost 5 times per week. Never excluded this one day of a week as a non business day before, so yeah, I work on Sunday.

I did re-scheduling sometimes, but I never thought I ‘m gonna need this Sunday on my life.

I just realized, I need one.

I ‘m not sure this writing mean something, just shouting out what’s inside my head. It’s pointless, maybe. Whatever.

I was having this wonderful rest today! Never felt this good before. Head and body refreshed! Oh yeah.. Me, definitely need a sunday.

We have a number of ways that you can subscribe to this site and receive updates. The main one that our readers use is our RSS feed. But what is RSS?

What the heck is RSS?

RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites.

In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website you had to ‘bookmark’ websites in your browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added.

The problems with bookmarking

1. You as the web surfer had to do all the work
2. It can get complicated when you are trying to track many websites at once
3. You miss information when you forget to check your bookmarks
4. You end up seeing the same information over and over again on sites that don’t update very often

Well, RSS Changes Everything

What if you could tell a website to let you know every time that they update? In a sense, this is what RSS does for you.

RSS flips things around a little and is a technology that provides you with a method of getting relevant and up to date information sent to you for you to read in your own time. It saves you time and helps you to get the information you want quickly after it was published.

RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’. Many people describe it as a ‘news feed’ that you subscribe to.

I find the ’subscription’ description helpful. It’s like subscribing to a magazine that is delivered to you periodically but instead of it coming in your physical mail box each month when the magazine is published it is delivered to your ‘RSS Reader’ every time your favorite website updates.

How RSS actually technically works is probably a lesson for another day but the key today is for you to understand why it’s good and how to use it.

Let me say right up front that I’m not the most technically savvy guy going around – but even I can use RSS. At first I found it a little strange to make the change from bookmarking to RSS but I found that when I started that I just couldn’t stop.

How to Use RSS

Get an RSS Reader – The first thing you’ll want to do if you’re getting into reading sites via RSS is to hook yourself up with an RSS Feed Reader.

There are many feed readers going around with a variety of approaches and features – however a good place to start is with a couple of free and easy to use web based ones like Google Reader and Bloglines. Either one will do if you’re starting out (I use Google’s Reader) – as I say there are many others to choose from but to get started either of these are fairly easy to use and will help you work out the basics of RSS.

Both of these feed readers work a little like email. As you subscribe to feeds you’ll see that unread entries from the sites you’re tracking will be marked as bold. As you click on them you’ll see the latest update and can read it right there in the feed reader. You are given the option to click through to the actual site or move onto the next unread item – marking the last one as ‘read’.

The best way to learn how to use either Google Reader or Bloglines is to simply subscribe to some feeds and give it a go. Both have helpful help sections to get you up and running.

Note: other options to tracking websites that you might already be familiar with include using pages like MyYahoo, MyGoogle and MyMSN.

Find Some Feeds to Subscribe to – there are two places to look for a site’s feed:

1. On the Site
2. In Your Browser

On Site Subscription
Over the last few years you may have noticed a lot of little buttons and widgets appearing on your favorite sites and blogs. Little orange buttons, ‘counters’ with how many ‘readers a blog has, links called RSS, XML, ATOM and many more.

They come in all shapes and sizes. Here are a few you might have seen :

There are plenty more – but any time you see any of these buttons or anything like them it means that the site you are viewing almost certainly has a feed that you can subscribe to. In most cases it’s as simple as either copying and pasting the link associated with the button into your RSS Reader or clicking the button and following the instructions to subscribe using the feed reader of your choice.

Browser Subscription

Many internet browsers now have the ability to find and subscribe to RSS feeds built right into them.

When you surf to a site you can usually tell if it has an RSS feed by looking in the right hand side of address bar where you type in the site’s URL.

Here’s how it looks for Djarot.com when you’re using Firefox :

See the little orange icon on the right hand side? Click that and you’ll be locating Djarot.com’s RSS feed.

Using Safari Browser it is a blue RSS icon :

Other modern browsers will have similar icons.

To quickly and easily subscribe by clicking these icons you’ll want to set up your browser to do it with your feed reader of choice as by default they will probably subscribe you using the in-browser reader. You can do this by going to the ‘preferences’ to your browser and choosing ‘Google Reader’ or ‘Bloglines’ etc as your feed reader.

Once you’ve done this and have subscribed to a few feeds you’ll begin to see unread items in your Feed Reader and you can start reading.

Don’t want to Use an RSS Reader? Email is an Option

If the above explanation all just seems a little too complicated for you then please don’t worry. Many sites also enable you to subscribe to RSS feeds via a more familiar medium – Email.

Alrite, let’s take a break for a while.. Put the whole search engine optimization tipsy tricks a side for a minute or two.. and take a look at our daily life a bit. It’s been a while since my last post about vulnerability, and it’s kinda answering my oldest call about how much I care to this security world years ago.
The subject above should tell us the idea of the topic I ‘m gonna write. Uh huh, you got it right buddy, Citibank ‘s Customers ATM PIN have been compromised! This subject is kinda spooky, but the real life situations are even more frightening!

I just finished this scary headline in yahoo, that hackers broke into Citibank’s network of ATMs inside 7-Eleven stores and stole customers’ PIN codes, according to recent court filings that revealed a disturbing security hole in the most sensitive part of a banking record.

The scam netted the alleged identity thieves millions of dollars. But more importantly for consumers, it indicates criminals were able to access PINs — the numeric passwords that theoretically, I repeat, theoretically, are among the most closely guarded elements of banking transactions — by attacking the back-end computers responsible for approving the cash withdrawals.

Is it even possible to do?

Well, from my experiences in the past when I still work on this “un-paid job not even a dime called being a freelance security adviser which most people not even know we were existed since we’re all writing security advisories using a cyber-nickname” group, there ‘re no such thing as “impossible” in hacker ‘s dictionary.
This group I used to work for ( for free ), our everyday activities is scanning for network vulnerabilities, and checking some software bugs, writing the advisories about it, and issued them in major security sites, contacting the vendors, and the best part of it, without getting paid. Whoa..
Yup, you heard me right, there still such people doing it, for some noble purposes. Me? I ‘m just a former, not anymore one of them now. As I built this tiny wonderful world we used to call “a family”, I should work my a55 out to monetize my expertize — ( is it even called an expertize? lol ) — to survive this rude world!

Back to the main issue, Yup it’s possible, nothing is impossible, the word impossible is not even existed in hacker ‘s glossary, not even in their vocabulary. You know most known hacker ‘s quote? “We did it because we can”. Whatta spirit!
From here, I ‘m gonna use the word “the bad guy” to replace the word hacker, coz I don’t agree to this public opinion that hackers always being referred to the bad guys.

How this Scary thing even possible from Happening?

Okay, we’re step into the mechanism, the how to, and the hole they’re into.

The bad guys are targeting the ATM system’s infrastructure, which is increasingly built on Microsoft Corp.’s Windows operating system and allows machines to be remotely diagnosed and repaired over the Internet. And despite industry standards that call for protecting PINs with strong encryption — which means encoding them to cloak them to outsiders — some ATM operators apparently aren’t properly doing that. The PINs seem to be leaking while in transit between the automated teller machines and the computers that process the transactions.

In plain english:

There ‘s a hole, which, it’s possible for us who know how to manage to get there, could take the advantages of the PIN data leaking.

This hole is created, from un-clean practices of some ATM operators who don’t properly doing the most basic known security practice called encryption.

Where’s the hole exactly? It’s between the automated teller machines and the computers that process the transactions, while in transit.

Avivah Litan, a security analyst with the Gartner research firm said:

“PINs were supposed be sacrosanct — what this (read: the hole and the PIN data leaking) shows is that PINs aren’t always encrypted like they’re supposed to be. The banks need much better fraud detection systems and much better authentication.”

The How to..

Woohoo.. The How to.. The best part of all advisories articles. Let’s conclude a bit. So.. There ‘s a hole, where the PIN data are leaking, and they’re leaking badly. How the bad guys (or should I say: we wannabe. lol) managed to get there?

Well.. It’s still a mystery.

Are you expecting some thing like: copy and paste the whole part of the script below, compile it to be a php executable file, execute it through a web interface using any favorite browser you used to use. Do you?

The most recent updates on this situation:

A critical issue in the investigation is how the bad guys infiltrated the system, a question that still hasn’t been answered publicly.

All that’s known is they broke into the ATM network through a server at a third-party processor, which means they probably didn’t have to touch the ATMs at all to pull off the heist.

They could have gained administrative access to the machines — which means they had carte blanche to grab information — through a flaw in the network or by figuring out those computers’ passwords. Or it’s possible they installed a piece of malicious software on a banking server to capture unencrypted PINs as they passed through.

All I can say is, in some hacker’s glossary meaning, it’s a direct attack.
If the bad guy finally found the leak, means the hole of this system has been there since the day its build, right? Actually it help us finally figured, that there ‘re something not right ( please notice: i don ‘t use the word “wrong”) from the first place.

Vendor ‘s Respond

Citibank, part of Citigroup Inc., has declined to comment on the technique or how many customers’ accounts were compromised. It said it notified affected customers and issued them new debit cards.
“We want our customers to know that, consistent with legal requirements, we do not hold them responsible for fraudulent activity in their accounts,” the bank said in a statement.

Oh well, we ‘re all agreed, the most interesting part of any vulnerability articles is the vendor responses.

Alrite, the next biggest issue is, the HOW.

Well, there’re some ways being discussed and being chosen as the most proper way.
Blocking the sites, is one of the way i ‘d like to discuss.

The sub-discussion is, is it possible?
So far, i still thinkin, it almost impossible, but still it’s doable.

It’s the end-user layer.

There’re some “real porn sites” around the internet, get the lists of them, insert it into an installed blocking porn software. they’re all blocked. ( Not precisely all, and doubtfully succeed. )

The higher level layer, block ‘em through the ISP level.

Just gathered allthe ISP’s all over the country, require them to block the listed porn sites, give them deadlines. Do some real inspections, give a real punishment if they don’t do the requirements. Done. They’re all blocked from they higher level then the end-user level. So if, i repeat, if, there’re some people who doesn’t install the “blocking porn sites” software, they won’t be able to access the site since its blocked at the isp level layer.

See, it’s doable. Told you.

So which part again is the hardest part?

The hardest part is the “getting all porn sites listed” part.

Alrite. The thing is, you can actually see it when you see a site is a porn site, by looking at it, and see some nude pictures in it.
But, what about some social networking sites? For example: myspace or friendster?
Or some almost everyday need search engine? for example: Google or Yahoo?
More of them are: youtube, wikipedia?

For your informations, Myspace and youtube, has been blocked in some of provider. It’s been confirmed, that Excelcomindo and Indosat, blocked Myspace & Youtube.

The worst part is, it’s blocked without some official notice to its vendor, while still more options then blocking.

Need a Real Action for the Plan fiction.

Still see it as a day dreaming, as a week ago i saw it on TV, the minister speak himself about ” you can download the software from the depkominfo site, install it to your pc, and it will block all the porn sites”.
And guess what? Until this very second, i can’t find any link on the site to download the referred software. Still fiction? Guess so, but I hope not.

Well. i ‘m ready to install it, but still can’t find it on its official site. So if i ‘m still be able to browse any porn sites, and got busted by the authorities, and that’s what i call, un-fair.

Don’t wait until Some “Un-wanted figure” take the “Un-wanted” Action.

The sub-title speak it self. It’s bolded and straight forward. So i ‘m not gonna discuss it.
Be prepared guys. Stay safe. This might be a new hole for some un-wanted part of this country’s bad guy, taking some advantages. And who’s the victim?
