Why so?
Well, the most is, let the readers know that their links will be followed. The badge will actually says something like:

Hey hey, you you, my blog is a DoFollower. Meaning, when you comment me, your links will be followed. So let’s all spread the Link Love all over again!

The Official I Follow Badge

Randaclay, firstly initiated this I Follow badge, and became sort of official I Follow badge.
Here they are:

Join the DoFollow Movement yet? You’re in already? Cool..
Can’t count your self in yet ‘coz you’re in blogger.com? Guess what, here’s the way out.

As we’ve all knew, Blogger by default, and other blogging software such as WordPress, automatically adds the “nofollow” microformat extension to all links from user generated content. User generated content is defined as comments or external sources such as linkbacks and trackbacks.

Alrite, for all of you who still blogging in blogger.com, here’s a way to remove the NoFollow from your blog.

First thing first

Warning: Before beginning this procedure → backup your template

First, this removal procedure applies to the New Blogger styled layout. It is impossible, at this time, to remove NoFollow from Classic styled Blogger templates. This is due to the fact that those templates use the variable {$CommentAuthorName$} which encapsulates the anchor link around linking text. I am working on getting around this, because I have another blog using this style.

There are a number of tip sites out there explaining how to accomplish the removal of NoFollow — and every one of them did not get it completely right. I have not found one yet who has addressed the issue of backlinks which also have the NoFollow extension added to it.

I have seen numerous comments left by readers of the tutorials stating that they could not find the NoFollow referenced in their layout template. Two reasons for this. They either are using the Classic template or more probably it is the same problem I encountered when I first went looking for it. I will explain why below, and it will be very clear as to why they missed it too.

Removing NoFollow from the template

1. Login to your dashboard and click on the Layout Link.

2. If you are already managing your blog, then click on the Template Tab.

3. Click on the Edit Html Sub-tab for Templates.
Here is the important part. On the upper right of the template edit area, there is a checkbox labeled Expand Widgets. Make sure it is checked.

Every tutorial I have read failed to mention the checkbox. The items we will be deleting are inside of sections, which in turn are inside of a widget. If the widget is collapsed, then we will not be able to see anything inside of the widget.

4. Do a search for nofollow in your expanded template. You can either use your browser menu by clicking on Edit>Find in page or via the keyboard Ctrl-F. When the dialog box comes up, type in nofollow, and enter.

You should come across a line of code that looks something like this:

<dt class='comment-author' expr:id='"comment-" + data:comment.id'>
 <a expr:name='"comment-" + data:comment.id'/>
 <b:if cond='data:comment.authorUrl'>
 <a expr:href='data:comment.authorUrl' rel='nofollow'><data:comment.author/></a>
 <b:else/>
 <data:comment.author/>
 </b:if>
 <data:commentPostedByMsg/>
</dt>

5. Delete the rel=’nofollow’ part and Save Your Template.

Optionally remove Nofollow from backlinks

By doing another search for nofollow in your expanded template, you will find another one for your backlinks. You can choose to delete this as outlined above — or not.

If you do delete the reference, do at your own risk. Backlinks are outside of your control and cannot be moderated. You can turn them off altogether via your Settings>Comments Tab. It is up to you.

Done it? Gr8..!
You’re now, part of the DoFollow Revolution!
Welcome to the club!

These past few months, me my self, witnessed a silent movement gain momentum and transform into a full-blown revolution. It’s the DoFollow movement.

WordPress adds the “rel=nofollow” attribute to all links in comments, by default. And so far, most blogging software does the same thing. With the good intentions: to prevent nasty spammers from leaving spammy comments.

But in real life, it doesn’t stop comment spam in any sense really. Beside, with good moderation and thanks to the genius use of Akismet plugin, spam controlled reasonably well.
In essence, all nofollow does is: prevent link love and google juice being shared amongst your loyal readers and commentators. Not really in the spirit of things, ain’t it?

So what can we conscientious bloggers do about the situation? Well luckily there are quite a few plugins that remove the nofollow command:

DoFollow Plugin (Semiologic) - This is the one that started it all, and the one I’ve installed. Plain and simple, it removes all nofollows from comments and trackbacks.

DoFollow (Kimmo Suominen) - This adds the ability to remove the nofollow once the comment reaches a certain age – ie after 2 days.

Link Love – This removes the nofollow once the commenter has posted a specific number of time – ie after 5 comments.

For me, the above plugins are the best, but for your strong consideration you should, i repeat, you should, read the Andy Beard’s ultimate list of DoFollow plugins.

If this movement continues gaining momentum, I can see WordPress removing the nofollow command by default before long. Until then though, you need a way to separate your Google juice sharing, link loving blog from all the miserable non-sharing blogs out there.

The DoFollow revolution continues to gain speed, and the number of bloggers following the movement has increased from a few dozen to many hundreds (if not more). I would love to link to them all and share the link love, but I suspect you might find it a somewhat boring read. Therefore I’m listing below just a handful of DoFollow advocates I’ve come across recently:

David Airey of Creative Design

Dawud Miracle of Healthy Webdesign

Brown Baron of Brown Thoughts

Char of Essential Keystrokes

Chris Garret of chrisg.com

The DoFollow movement is all about thanking you for contributing to my site. Another way of doing it is just saying “thanks”. So, all of you, thanks for the recent comments.

Inspired by Aaron, Milienzo.com from his words about Joining the DoFollow Revolution. You did it buddy!
